Have You Heard the Gospel?
Before understanding what the Gospel is, it’s important to know what the word "Gospel" means. The term comes from the Greek word euangelion, meaning "good news." In the Christian faith, this refers to the good news of Jesus Christ.
But before we talk about the good news, we need to start with the bad news.
Are You a Good Person?
Let’s begin by reflecting on a few questions:
Have you ever told a lie? (Leviticus 19:11-13)
Have you ever stolen anything? (Exodus 20:15)
Have you ever taken God’s name in vain? (Exodus 20:7)
Have you ever hated someone? (Exodus 20:13, 1 John 2:9-11)
Have you ever looked at someone lustfully? (Exodus 20:14, Matthew 5:28)
These questions are based on God’s Law, the Ten Commandments. When we break God’s Law, it’s called sin. According to the Bible, if you’ve sinned even once, you’re not considered good. Instead, the Bible says you’re a sinner.
What Does the Bible Say About Sinners?
Everyone is born a sinner (Psalm 51:5).
Everyone has sinned (Romans 3:23, James 4:17).
God sees all of our sins (Numbers 32:23).
Sinners are enemies of God (Colossians 1:21).
The bad news is that we’re sinners and enemies of God. But it gets worse: The Bible teaches that "[God] has set a day when He will judge the world in justice" (Acts 17:31). When we die, we will stand before God to be judged for our sins (Hebrews 9:27). Just like a criminal answers for their crimes before a judge, we will be held accountable before God for our sins.
On Judgment Day, every thought, word, and action will be reviewed. If we’re found guilty of breaking God’s Law, the punishment is eternal separation from God in Hell.
What Is Hell Like?
The Bible describes Hell as:
Eternal punishment (Matthew 25:46).
Eternal fire (Jude 1:7).
A blazing furnace (Matthew 13:50).
Many believe they can earn their way into Heaven through good works—by giving to the poor, being kind, or caring for others. But Jesus said this mindset is flawed:
"Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven… Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’" (Matthew 7:21-23).
There’s nothing we can do on our own to earn Heaven or erase our sins.
Are You Ready for Judgment Day?
If you died today, would God find you innocent or guilty? Would you go to Heaven or Hell?
If we’re honest, we all deserve Hell. We’ve all sinned, whether in big or small ways, in public or in secret. On our own, we are completely lost and without hope.
Here’s the Good News
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Though we broke God’s Law and deserve punishment, God did something extraordinary: He sent His Son, Jesus, to save us.
Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life and willingly died on the cross in our place. One of His final words on the cross was, “It is finished” (John 19:30). In Greek, this phrase means “paid in full,” signifying that our debt of sin was completely paid.
But the good news doesn’t stop there. Three days after His death, Jesus rose from the grave, defeating sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Through His resurrection, we can have victory too. When we put our faith in Jesus, God no longer sees our sins but the righteousness of Jesus.
How to Be Saved
If you want to escape God’s judgment and be saved, here’s what you must do:
Believe – Trust that Jesus died for your sins and rose again. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Salvation is not earned by good works but through Jesus’ finished work on the cross.
Repent – Turn away from sin and commit to living for Jesus. Repentance means changing your ways and faithfully following Jesus day by day.
